MORPRIME Industries™ Picks of the Month: May 2024

Strap in space cadets; you're about to traverse the intriguing expanse of MORPRIME Industries™ Picks of the Month for May 2024.

No messing around; we're jumping straight in with our footwear POTM: the Teddy Santis x New Balance U993GW "Chive". What a sweet green dream of a pair the Aimé Leon Dore founder has produced. Proudly put together in the brand's USA factories, the collaborative effort boasts a top-drawer construction combining premium pigskin suede and breathable mesh. They're proper summer steppers, and we need them pronto.

Our second POTM isn't a pair of shoes or a product. Nope, it's Sneaker, the exhibition that just closed its doors at the NRW-Forum in Düsseldorf. Sadly, we didn't make a trip to Germany to check it out, but from what we've seen on socials, it looked truly incredible.

The exhibition dived into the cultural phenomenon of sneakers. It explored the history of these iconic kicks, tracing their journey from basketball courts to fashion runways and chronicling how sneakers have been intertwined with hip-hop, design movements, and even social change. The exhibit went beyond laces and leather, examining the cutting-edge technology woven into futuristic silhouettes and showcasing groundbreaking innovations from silhouettes over the years. We're gutted we didn't go.

Well, we may have missed the sneaker history exhibition, but at least we can relive a piece of it with the revival of the Nike Air 180 "Ultramarine". This pair very nearly nabbed the top spot this month. It's the first time the brand has brought the silhouette in its OG form, with the correct proportions and Air bubble sizing. They'll be on our feet all summer, that's for sure.

You can always count on a Kiko and ASICS collab to land in our POTM. Arriving as part of the Bulgarian-born designer's CURATORIAL Collection, he's injected his avante-garde style into ASICS’ US5-S GEL-QUANTUM KINETIC. The collection draws from the juxtaposition of various material environments: Brandishing, Lucent Gloss, Soft and Hard Frames, and Pattern Tessellations. We don't know what it means, but it sounds fancy.

Although it dropped in April, another collab that caught our eye this month was the Shoe Palace x New Balance 2002R "Volcanic Rocks Pack". The blue "Air" colourway boasts a spaced-out open mesh base representing lava's flow through the air. While the brown "Land" pair features a tighter mesh weave fabric symbolising lava's earthbound terminus. Groovy and geological.

Speaking of geology, Korea-based techwear label POST ARCHIVE FACTION joined forces with On for a futuristic take on the Cloudmonster 2. The shoe's shape is apparently inspired by rivers. It's an interesting one, to say the least.

Here's one for you Bball heads. Designed by the mind behind iconic Nike silhouettes, the EQLZ® 247 is the latest innovation from ex-Nike designer Aaron Cooper.

While we're on the basketball theme, Tinker Hatfield's '90s Air Darwin turns 30 in 2024. To celebrate, Supreme has given it a skate-ready overhaul. The Supreme x Nike SB Air Darwin Low "Khaki" arrives with a lower cut, heavy canvas uppers, reverse Swooshing, and co-branding. Top drawer stuff.

Moving on to the realm of media but sticking with Supreme…

We need to secure the Supreme 30 Years: T-Shirts 1994-2024 Book. This comprehensive box set chronicles three decades of the streetwear giants' iconic t-shirt designs. Some absolute beauties in there leave us itching to scour the second-hand marketplaces.

Doctor Doom is back. The new Marvel one-shot's tribute to the late MF DOOM ensured our lab rats would snatch up a copy. But throw a Hildebrandt Brothers front cover variant into the mix, and you've got yourself a 100% guarantee. A stunner and a great story to boot.

Film-wise, we've been digging Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. A prequel packed with pure high-octane post-apocalyptic action – it's a MORPRIME team member's perfect genre.

That's all we've got for this month. Transport yourself back to our REPORTS hub for even more servings of knowledge.
